When I’m back in London there’s a building I like to visit. If you’re an art lover and you’ve been to London you may know the place. It’s the Whitechapel Gallery in London’s East End. But it’s not the art that I go for, it’s the building itself or rather its new-old addition – the former Whitechapel Library.

Lovely post! I first heard about this East London area in Rodinsky’s Room by Rachel Lichtenstein and Iain Sinclair – an account of the strange disappearance of a mystic who lived above a synagogue in Whitechapel. The book is really more of a meditation on the Eastern European roots of the Jews who had lived there. Thanks for sharing this bit of history. How strange to return and find things changed, but with the past still peering through.
